I go into moive sna purchase it and it auto loads so I can watch it. Generally I am ok with the interface, but what I dislike is how many times I have to click play to watch a movie/show. With the 2nd/3rd Gen I had to log in and out of accounts to go between the two and that kind of sucked.

This is useful since I have purchased hundreds of TV shows and Movies from iTunes US store and have Japanese Netflix and Hulu accounts. I love that the 4th Gen connects to my plex server, and that I can connect to both my US and Japanese itunes accounts without logging out of either. It is the only one I have any experience with. Also a touch surface is WAY WAY better for scrolling through lists of things than any buttons, much faster. The buttons of course press, but the touchpad ALSO presses, you can feel if you are at an edge to press, you can feel when you are not near an edge to press. Who on earth has such poor motor coordination they cannot manage this? Hint: My three year old niece can use it easily. also if you have an iPhone and a keyboard comes up on the Apple TV, you can just type on your phone.Ĭome on, the control is just swiping across the surface that is like an inch wide, or tapping one of the edges or the center - while you are holding it. The SIRI button is mainly used for searches, and works really well.
You can tell which way is up by feel, and since you are using the touch surface for most selections you can easily use the remote in the dark, without looking. I have not issues with this remote at all. Prices are reasonable too, especially compared to Roon.Designers can't seem to get it through their heads that the #1 priority for TV remote is for it to be usable without looking away from the TV

Good news is that once purchased a license to a version it does not expire, and paying to update is optional, so one can use a version indefinitely and only update if needed. Feels like a mature software, with new versions fixing bugs and adding little value any longer, at lease in my opinion. So I am not sure where they are going next. Advanced tweaking with upsampling options and OS optimizations have also been scrapped by internal policy.
Also they refuse to integrate with streaming, which in 2020 looks like its the future (even if I personally do not use it in my main system). I think that in the last few years they have been lacking useful new features, only focusing on smaller things. It has many, many features so that it has a somewhat steep learning curve. DSP for convolution, parametric EQ, upsampling, DLNA local network streaming, audio and video conversions, tagging, ripping, synching devices, smart playlists, VST plugin support, different user interfaces (Theater View, Panel, Gizmo, JRemote).

JRiver is now a traditional media center software that has expanded from Windows to Mac, Android and handles all kinds of audio and video files. But if you own music files - that's a different question. It is most likely not the 1st choice to use with streaming supplied music. But I do agree with software is (handled as being) mature. The future to come: I still believe the software has tremendous potential. But - In general it is very very difficult to get feedback from the company on any question. In addition to the "wiki" a user forum offers help. The options to customize are huge but the JRiver "wiki" is somehow outdated and not very structured. The biggest "disappointment" is the support. I simply do have all my music and audiobooks always with me - anywhere! I also appreciate the ability of JRiver to supply audio outside the local LAN (over internet). This sounds normal - but its not - other software solutions don't offer any options to rate or prevent users from storing the ratings "outside" the application. So the curation I'm performing on my music collection stays within my control at all time. It is ease to store the values with the audio files or export. I do very much appreciate the fact that JRiver grants ownership over - for example - track ratings. In conjunction with the internet database Musicbrainz JRiver works just fine. This flexibility to customize is based on the metadata available in your audio files (so without this metadata you have to use JRiver own library).
